Falls are the No. 1 reason for injury-related hospitalizations for older adults in Canada, more than 1.6 million seniors fall each year. Almost half experience serious injuries, such as fractures and sprains; falls cause 95 per cent of hip fractures in those over 65. Close to 20 per cent of seniors die within one year of a fall. * Provided by Parachute Canada

Falls Injuries across Wellington County far outweigh the number any other injury across Wellington County. Nineteen Thousand Seven hundred and nine people visited Emergency rooms across Wellington County due to a fall related injury between 2010 and 2015. One thousand seven hundred and eight people were hospitalized staying a total of 15,925 days.

While most falls in children don’t cause serious injury, nearly 5,000 children from birth to 9 years were admitted to a hospital and more than 165,000 visited an emergency department as a result of a fall in 2010. This makes falls a leading cause for hospital admissions and emergency room visits from injury in those ages 0 to 9.”
